The 11th edition of the outdoor concert series “Summer Nights” in the Palau Robert gardens in Barcelona will begin on 1 July. This year the series will include four concerts, in addition to a live broadcast of a zarzuela from the Gran Teatre del Liceu and a film projection. Highlighted during the 2010 “Summer Nights” will be the European Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion, launched by the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union. Special support will also be given to the Vicente Ferrer Foundation’s activities in India’s Andhra Pradesh state.

Collaborating in the organisation of this series are the Catalan Agency for Development Cooperation, under the Vice-Presidential Department of the Government of Catalonia; the European Institute of the Mediterranean (IEMed); the Office of the European Parliament in Barcelona; and the “la Caixa” Social Projects.
The concert series began 1 July with the reading of a text on the European Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion and about the Vicente Ferrer Foundation, written by author Màrius Serra. The reading will be followed by a performance by Turkish musical group Baro Banda, founded in Istanbul in 2006. Baro Banda’s music is an emotional barometer for Istanbul, the city to which the Palau Robert has dedicated its exhibition “Around Istanbul with Pamuk”, which goes through 15 August.
The other “Summer Nights” activities are as follows:
Thursday, 8 July, 8:30 pm, performance by Ester Formosa, accompanied by a piano, trumpet and contrabass trio, presenting Formosa x Formosa: Ester Sings Feliu.
Thursday, 15 July, 8:30 pm, Raynald Colom presents Evocation. Journalist Manel Fuentes will read a text on the European Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion and about the Vicente Ferrer Foundation.
Thursday, 22 July, 8:30 pm, performance by pianist Ignasi Terraza, accompanied by Jesse Davis on the sax and Damon Brown on the trumpet.
Wednesday, 28 July, 10:00 pm, live broadcast of the zarzuela Doña Francisquita, by Amadeu Vives, from the Gran Teatre del Liceu.
Thursday, 29 July, 10:30 pm, projection of the French film Welcome, directed by Philippe Lioret, winner of the European Parliament 2009 LUX Film Prize.

Where: El Palau Robert – Passeig de Gràcia, 107 Barcelona
