BARCELONA ZOO

Barcelona Zoo is set in a magnificent garden over 100 years old, covering 13 hectares of Ciutadella Park and containing a collection of some 7,500 individual animals belonging to more than 400 species from all over the world, including:

– The large collection of primates, all in danger of extinction

– The group of bottlenose dolphins, which have been breeding continually for some years now, and give spectacular performances daily.

– The Iberian wolf, a seriously threatened species here; the Zoo is responsible for coordinating its reproduction in captivity throughout Europe.

– Within the big cats, endangered species and subspecies such as the Sumatran tiger, the Sri Lanka leopard the snow leopard, he cheetah and others.

– A large collection of mammals ranging from endangered bovines, such as the bongo and the anoa, to species that are seldom found in captivity such as the tapir.

– The Doñana bird centre, where the most important species of the native fauna are bred in order to help repopulate protected areas in Catalonia.

– The terrarium, with a varied range of amphibians and reptiles from all over the world; it has over 500 animals belonging to more than 100 species, and is regarded as one of the best in Europe.

In the Children’s Zoo we can point out, among many other domestic and farm animals, the Iberian pig, the hen of the Prat and the Catalan donkey, the autochthonous race of these useful animals in the past, that is one of the biggest in the world and it has been about to become extinct.
