Barcelona residents are invited to make the former Model prison their own as from Sunday January 21st , with the first of the weekly opening days.

La ModelLa Model will be opening its doors every Friday from 3 pm to 8 pm and every Saturday from 10 am to 6 pm (last group enters at 6 pm). The facilities at the former penitentiary center can be visited for free, without reserving in advance. Groups of a maximum of thirty people will set off around the building every 15 minutes. Visitors will be able to see areas such as the entrance yard, the post room, the phone booths, the center of the panoptic viewpoint, galleries 4 and 5 and the multi-purpose sports yard.

In the spring, the free visits will be combined with guided and themed tours, allowing for more in-depth knowledge and content relating to the old prison, as well as with the different collectives it housed over its history.

The public will also be able to visit the new interior yard, a green space which will be open from Mondays to Saturday, from 10 am to 7 pm.

Coinciding with the opening up of La Model, visitors will also be able to see the photography display ‘Inside La Model’, which will be exhibiting a series of large format photos of the inside of the prison on the outside of the perimeter wall. The exhibition is the work of Josep Maria de Llobet, whose images offer an account of what the inside of the prison was like when it was definitively closed down in June 2017.
